Barrack Room Ballads Two Sunsets

NTS Radio // 25.01.15

This show was a bit of a blast from the past, as we dug out some old Abner Jay, Mike Auldridge and Flying Burrito Brothers vinyl – slide guitar heaven! I also slipped in my favourite Ewan MacColl track, ‘Join the British Army’ (1958). MacColl enlisted in the British Army in 1940 but deserted after a few months. He then attracted “special attention” from MI5, but mysteriously avoided prosecution. I love the flippant Toodle ooo’s married with the tune – a gloomy version of the American Civil War song When Johnny Comes Marching Home. This and other anti-war dittys can be heard on MacColl’s Barrack Room Ballads
