Guest Mix // Gary Wilson

Like Gary Wilson‘s music, which finds sleazy keys sharing the backseat with unnerving bricolage in some kind of perpetual high-school-date-gone-wrong, this mix veers from the hazy “easy listening” croons of Johnny Mathis to the downright terrifying Patty Waters (Black! Black!). Herein lies the crux of Gary’s music – a taste dichotomy that soothes and disgusts, excites and repels.

That said, most of this set is pretty darned exciting. It’s bookended (and shot through the middle) with the addictive fuzz of the Fugs; other psychy garage nuggets are sprinkled throughout, as are doowop jams from Gary’s youth, and some classical ponderers, to keep you on your toes. See below for a little insight kindly provided by Gary on each of his selections…

The Fugs – Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out
“One of the first underground bands out of New York City. When I was 14 years old my band (Dr. Zork and the Warts) covered a few Fugs songs. When I was 15 years old I had a chance to see them live at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.”

Dion – Runaround Sue
“I was inspired at 10 years old by Dion. My mother would curl my hair to look like Dion’s hair. I joined Dion’s fan club when I was 10 years old.”

The Rolling Stones – Under My Thumb
“I liked the Stones when they had Brian Jones in the band.”

Ralph Vaughan Williams – The Lark Ascending
“This composition always brings a tear to my eyes. Always thought it would be cool to turn the violin solo in this track into a guitar or saxophone solo.”

The Seeds – Can’t Seem To Make You Mine
“Had all of the Seeds albums when I was a teenager. One of the rock bands I played in as a teenager (Lourde Fuzz) played this track.”

Patty Waters – Black Is The Color Of My True Love’s Hair
“Had her early albums on ESP Records. I remember hearing this on an underground radio station when I was a young teenager. The local record store had to special order Patty’s albums as they were hard to come by.”

Fabian – I’m A Man
“Before I was a teenager I was into Frankie Avalon, Dion, Bobby Rydell and Fabian.”

The Fugs – The Garden Is Open
“One of my favourite bands when I was a teenager.”

The Beatles – A Day In The Life
“I was a Beatle fan when I turned 12 years old. My bedroom walls were plastered with Beatle photos and posters. I saw The Beatles live at Shea Stadium In New York.”

Claude Debussy – Claire De Lune
“One of my favourite composers. Such sensitive music.”

J. Frank Wilson And The Cavaliers – Last Kiss
“This song always makes me sad.”

Sting – Fields Of Gold
“A pretty tune.”

The Shangri-Las – Remember (Walking In The Sand)
“This song brings me back to my pre-teen days when AM radio was king.”

Johnny Mathis – Wild Is The Wind
“A beautiful tune.”

The Fugs – Morning Morning
“Brings back fond memories of when I was a teenager.”
