Without intrepid crate diggers like Awesome Tapes From Africa we would know nothing about groups like the Dur-Dur Band. “Dooyo” is a rare window into late ’80s Somalia, a laid back scene far removed from its current civil-war-torn state. Here we have compact, tightly-played funk topped with almost Bollywood-like vocals. Even the cassette rip lends a sort of muscular, vital quality to the recording. Perhaps James Murphy’s tipple if he was born five decades ago in Mogadishu.
